Yogurt A Dairy Superfood?

Yogurt A Dairy Superfood?

We all want to eat better with more nutrient dense foods and live well and be healthier.  Here is one superfood that is a must eat daily. Yogurt is a great snack or meal for many people for any time of day or night.  Yogurt has a lot of health benefits as a healthy dairy food to consume.  Yogurt is abundant in nutrients and vitamins the body needs.

Here are some of the nutrients found in yogurt:

Calcium

B vitamins

B12 vitamin

Riboflavin

Phosphorous

Magnesium

Vitamin D is not found naturally in yogurt, but vitamin D is added in the yogurt for consumption as a supplement by the producer of the yogurt. Some yogurt makers add in vitamin D 3 which a better d supplement for the body.  Any vitamin D is good as well.

Yogurt is high in protein.

High protein foods help to suppress appetite and provide a sense of being full over longer periods of time.  Protein regulates the appetite.  Protein also has been discovered to send signals to the brain that the body is full and satisfied. The feeling of being full helps maintain weigh which helps stop the unnecessary snacking and overeating. If feel hungry or just have the munchies, a snack craving, eat some yogurt to satisfy your hunger.

Many varieties and brands of yogurt.

There are large selection options available for yogurt brands on the market shelves in the dairy section. Here are some suggestions to help you make the right selection of yogurt.

Make sure you check the labels and avoid the yogurts that contain a lot of sugar.  Sugar is tasty and needed in some foods, but sugar adds unnecessary calories. Studies have shown that sugar will stimulate your appetite so you feel hungry. To reduce your feelings of hunger is to consume protein such as meat, cheese, dairy products, and eggs.

Highest protein containing yogurts are Greek yogurt.

Studies on Greek yogurt yielded interesting information and data. Greek yogurt is a thicker variety of yogurt that contains the most amount of protein in yogurts.  Greek yogurt controls and delays the feelings of hunger longer than other yogurts with less protein.

This was an experimental purchase for a different flavor of yogurt for me.  I must say, I love this yogurt.  Label below clearly shows the live active cultures listed.  See Label States Live and Active Cultures Listed.

Live Active Cultures and Probiotics

When shopping for yogurt look at the labels that state have live active cultures aka probiotics on the label. Probiotics are made of live good bacteria and or yeasts that naturally found in your body.  Probiotics are good bacteria that is shown to help keep the body healthy and working as the body should. Probiotics occur naturally in the body.  Bacteria usually brings up negative thoughts and emotions that bacteria causes illness, but there are good beneficial bacteria as well. In everyone's bodies, there are good and bad bacteria.

Probiotics Live In The Body In These Locations:

                   * Intestines/Gut

                    * Mouth

                    *Lungs

                    *Vagina

                    *Urinary Tract

                    *Skin

Let's go over the difference between probiotics and live active cultures in simple terms. All probiotics are live active cultures which are microorganisms used to ferment food and drink.  Here is the difference, not all live active cultures are probiotics.  The function of probiotics are to help keep the body healthy and balanced bacteria wise.

Here are some pictures of Dannon yogurt that I consume frequently.  Look at the label for the live active cultures.

Here are some of the live active cultures / Probiotics  that are most commonly found in yogurt.

Lactobacillus Acidophilus

Lactobacillus Acidophilus is the most commonly used live active culture in yogurt which will be shown on the label. L.A. for short is also found in fermented foods such as pickles, sauerkraut, and supplements to name a few of these fermented foods. There are a lot of health benefits cited from science that L. Acidophilus is healthy to consume.

There are many different strains of live active cultures aka probiotics.  Each strain is known by scientists to have different health benefits.

Bifidobacterium bifidum

Bifidobacterium bifidum bacteria lives in the intestines.  This probiotic has been shown to help with diarrhea, constipation, and other intestinal issues.

Saccharomyces boulardii

Saccharomyces boulardii is used to make breads, beer, and wine. Also found in Kombucha and Kefir drinks. Saccharomyces boulardii is another popular probiotic  that is a type of yeast that helps with relieving symptoms of diarrhea and other more severe gastrointestinal issues and diseases.

Streptococcus thermophilus

Streptococcus thermophilus is commonly found in yogurt and cheese. Used to stabilize other probiotic bacteria that normally don't grow well in milk.

There is a vast amount of information and scientific studies that show there is a major benefit of consuming yogurt to keep and improve your health.  As with anything, consume in moderation.  If you have medical conditions or take medications, and have never consumed these products before, you should consult your medical professional.
